Lighting retrofit project

BENEFITS OF LED LIGHTING

LED (Light Emitting Diodes) are the latest and most exciting technological advancement in the lighting industry. LEDs are small, solid light bulbs which are extremely energy efficient and long lasting. LEDs operate differently than traditional incandescent light bulbs. This makes LEDs far more rugged and durable than traditional incandescent light bulbs. LED technology also offers many additional advantages over incandescent, neon and compact fluorescent lighting devices – such as exceptionally longer life span (from 25,000 – 100,000 hours), enormously lower energy usage (90% more efficient), reduced maintenance costs and higher safety. LEDs are currently being used for a wide variety of applications such as: residential lighting, aerospace, architectural lighting, automotive, aviation, broadcasting, electronic instrumentation, entertainment and gaming, industrial automation and controls, the military, traffic and safety & transportation.

Efficiency

LEDs are extremely energy efficient and consume up to 90% less power than incandescent bulbs. Since LEDs use only a fraction of the energy of an incandescent light bulb there is a dramatic decrease in power costs. Also, money and energy is saved in maintenance and replacement costs due to the long LED lifespan.

Because of the low power usage of LEDs, they are becoming extremely popular for light sources in remote areas that use solar panels.

Although LEDs have a higher initial cost than incandescent and compact fluorescent light bulbs, the cost is quickly recouped over time in lower electricity costs.

Longevity

LEDs have a lifespan of up to 50,000 hours compared to 1,500 hours for incandescent bulbs. An LED light will last over 6 years (constant use) before needing replacement. On average, LED bulbs last 10 times as long as compact fluorescent bulbs, and 133 times longer than typical incandescent bulbs. Long lifespan of LEDs will dramatically reduce maintenance costs and lower long-term operating costs compared to traditional incandescent and fluorescent tubes.

LED lifespan scenarios:

– 50,000 hours powered 4 hours/day = 34 year lifespan

– 50,000 hours powered 8 hours/day = 17 year lifespan

– 50,000 hours powered 24 hours/day = 6 year lifespan

Durability

LEDs are solid state lighting devices that utilize semiconductor material instead of a filament or neon gas. An LED light is a tiny chip encapsulated in an epoxy resin enclosure, which makes LEDs far sturdier than traditional incandescent light bulbs or fluorescent tubes. Since LEDs don’t use fragile components such as glass and filaments, LEDs are able to withstand shock, vibration and extreme temperature.

Safety

Improved safety may be LED’s most important benefit

LED lights generate virtually no heat therefore they are cool to the touch and can be left on for hours without incident or consequence if touched. LED’s produce 3.4 btu’s/hour, compared to 85 for incandescent bulbs. In comparison, incandescent lighting expels 90% of the energy it consumes via heat, making the bulbs hot to the touch. LEDs reduce the potential for safety risks such as burns and fires.

Environment

LEDs are made from non-toxic materials, unlike fluorescent lighting that uses mercury that may pose a danger to the environment. LED’s are also recyclable and considered “green” or Earth-Friendly.

Color

LED lights are offered in a variety of base colors such as Red, Green, Blue and Amber. Because traditional incandescent light bulbs use filters to produce colors, they are extremely inefficient. LEDS can be blended together to produce millions of color options.

Future

LEDs are poised to replace traditional incandescent light bulbs. LEDs are rapidly becoming the preferred lighting solution of both professionals and residential users. LED technology is continually advancing – producing brighter LED bulbs.  The U.S. Department of Energy hopes to reduce the electricity used for lighting by 50% by converting to LED based light sources.

Uses

LEDs are currently used for a wide variety of different applications such as: residential lighting, aerospace industry, architectural, automotive, broadcasting, electronic instrumentation, entertainment and gaming, the military, traffic and transportation.  Since LEDs are focused lights they prove best at specific lighting tasks such as desk lamps, reading lights, night lights, security lights, spot lights, accent lights and lighting for signage.

INTRODUCTION

A.S. ELECTRICAL SERVICES LTD has all ways been pleased to be contracted by Condominium Corporations to perform nondestructive electrical infrared thermography on all electrical apparatus and motors, and still working on better ways to help managers out to run their properties smoothly and effortlessly using our knowledge which comes from research and experience.

The purpose of inspection is to identify any thermal patterns and temperatures that may indicate electrical wear or failure. This is done by utilizing the “FLIR” B55 SERIES handheld thermal imaging system.

Infrared inspections are used to locate areas in need of maintenance. These anomalies can be located with infrared imaging systems because of their increased or decreased temperatures. The temperature rise of a detected anomaly is measured and then the I.R. and the digital reference images are taken for documentation.

The report is limited to the size and extent of inspection conducted and as such is not meant to be a warranty nor guarantee. It does not relieve concerned parties from their obligations.

Factors such as environmental fluctuations make it impossible to accurately predict when an anomaly will result in a system failure. We suggest preventive maintenance to ensure uninterrupted functioning of all electrical apparatus and motors at your location.

Fundamentals of Infrared Thermography

untitled-2Why Carbon Monoxide System is needed

Carbon monoxide is one of the most highly produced and death causing gas in North America. According to Statistics Canada, there were over 350 deaths caused by carbon monoxide in Canada between 2000 and 2009. It is produced by incomplete combustion, such as the burning of gasoline in vehicles. Carbon monoxide diffuses with oxygen in open grounds, but carbon monoxide becomes dangerous if released in an enclosed environment such as garages, houses or basements. This catastrophic gas was discovered by the innocent lives the gas has taken before human fully understand the concepts of carbon monoxide. This lead to the many great inventions to counter this deadly gas, such as the exhaust fan, its purpose is to create suction 24/7 and eliminate all polluted air.

Although this method is effective it costs a lot of electricity to run it constantly, especially at night when cars are mostly parked and not polluting the garage with carbon monoxide. By running this machine 24/7 it creates other serious problems or damages within the building not only the garage itself. Due to the constant suction of air it also brings in air from outside the building, in the summer it might not be a bother, but in the winter, the cold air will enter the garage through the exhaust fan and drop the garage’s temperature. When the temperature is low, it will force florescent lights to dim significantly (70%-80%) damaging the light tube itself through the process. The drop-in temperature due to constant removal of air, even if the garage is not polluted with carbon monoxide during certain time slots ranging mostly throughout the night and early mornings. The chances of water pipe bursting due to the low temperature also increases. All these factors will lead to the misspend of large amounts of electricity, the damage of fluorescent lights, the dimming of the garage, and the increase chance of bursting water pipes will add up to an outrageous financial deprivation.

All of which can be complete alleviated and rid of by installing a carbon monoxide monitoring system. With this system, the exhaust fan will only be activated when the carbon monoxide monitor detects any sort of pollution caused by carbon monoxide. After installing the carbon monoxide monitoring system, it can save up to 80% of electricity use by only activating when there is carbon monoxide in the garage making it complete safe and reliable. This literally means it will only use 20% of the power a normal exhaust fan uses and will fully prevent all problems created due to low temperatures caused by the exhaust fan during the process of air elimination because it will reduce the activeness of the exhaust fan, this is also a big saving from exhaust fans maintenance and repairs.

BENEFIT OF Carbon Monoxide Monitoring System:

  • Keep safe and clean environment in parking garage.
  • Saving 80% on Hydro Cost
  • Saving on exhaust fans maintenance and repairs by using couple of hours per day.
  • Saving on florescent lamps replacement during the winter.
  • Prevent water pipe burst during the winter
  • Qualified for Hydro Incentive Program

Calibration Services:

All carbon monoxide detectors need to be tested and calibrated 1-4 times per year to conform to the manufacturer’s specifications.

Regular ongoing maintenance and calibration is the best way to ensure a properly functioning Carbon Monoxide system.
